Celebrating 70 Years of Volkswagen Excellence in America

Last November marked the 70th anniversary of Volkswagen models being sold in America, and Volkswagen celebrated during the LA Auto Show. In 1949, a Dutch businessman, Ben Pon, arrived in New York with two Volkswagen Type 1 vehicles, which was later known as the Beetle. Selling these models was one of the first attempts to sell affordable, small vehicles to Americans.

More than 17 million vehicles later, Volkswagen celebrates 70 years of selling vehicles in America at the LA Auto Show.

The Long History of the Volkswagen Brand in America

Regardless of the style or size of the Volkswagen model, Volkswagen has always maintained its status as "the people's car," providing exceptional value and distinctive, fun-to-drive vehicles for Aurora, CO, drivers.

With the Volkswagen now firmly rooted in American automotive history, Scott Keogh, President and CEO, Volkswagen of America, Inc., mentioned that Volkswagen is now setting bigger goals for its next-generation electric vehicles, but will never lose track of where the company started.

Volkswagen of America was established in 1955 to organize dealers and provide parts and service. As some drivers in the Denver, CO, area may remember, in 1959, the brand ran its first iconic, "Think Small" ads, highlighting the benefits of the air-cooled, easy-to-maintain Beetle. Iconic Volkswagen models like the Beetle, Bus, and Karmann Gia helped to shape '60s culture.

The '70s brought demands for even more efficient models, and Volkswagen responded with models like the Scirocco and the Rabbit. In 1978, Volkswagen built its first plant and assembled more than 1.1 million Rabbit models, as well as Volkswagen's first American sporty car, the Rabbit GTI.

Volkswagen celebrated its long history in America by including the following models and their modern-day counterparts:

  • 1949 Beetle
  • 1954 Type 2 Bus
  • 1963 Karmann Ghia
  • 1967 Type 2 21-Window Bus
  • 1973 Thing
  • 1973 Squareback
  • 1977 Dasher
  • 1979 Super Beetle
  • 1981 Scirocco
  • 1982 Mk1 Jetta
  • 1984 Mk1 Rabbit GTI
  • 1998 New Beetle
