The New Volkswagen Atlas is a Great Choice for Families - or, Anyone

The VW Atlas isn't just a great choice for families--though, with a spacious interior, plenty of seating, and a lot of standard safety features, it's a really good choice for families. Thanks to its modern styling, affordable starting price, and variety of great trim level options, the new Atlas can fit just about any lifestyle for drivers who need a bigger car for their daily travels. What's New for the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas?

The 2021 Atlas has a restyled exterior design, newly available performance features, and updated connectivity. The new front and rear fascias add three inches of overall length to the Atlas for a bold appearance. A commanding three-bar grille and revised LED headlights make for striking good looks. Models with the R-Line option come with special badging, a body kit, and 20- or 21-inch rims.

When it comes to the interior design, you will find a new steering wheel, updated stitching on the seats, and an 8.0-inch touchscreen display for the SE and SEL trim levels. You can also expect the latest iteration of the Volkswagen brand's Car-Net smartphone app for convenient access to your vehicle.

One of the most exciting updates is the addition of an all-wheel drive system available for models with the four-cylinder engine, proving more traction and stability when you need it.

  • Top trim levels now available with a 235-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine
  • Better connectivity and driver-assistance features
  • All-wheel-drive four-cylinder model now available
  • Updated front and rear styling

Interior Features & Specs

On the inside, you will find updates for more comfort and convenience when driving around Denver, CO. The revised control and new steering wheel make for an intuitive driving experience. A wireless charging pad is now available under the center stack to easily keep your smartphone charged while on the go.

Cargo Room & Seating

The VW Atlas has impressive storage space--expected for a vehicle like this. With 20.6 cubic feet of cargo room behind the rear seat, you've got plenty to work with when packing for school, sports, or even a day trip. Going solo? Fold all the seats down and you get up to 96.8 cubic feet of usable space for gear.

The standard Atlas configurations seat seven passengers in a two-three-two setup. Unlike other three-row crossovers, that third-row seat can actually fit real adults in it. That's huge. Select trim levels do give you the option of Captain's Chairs in the middle, which decreases seating capacity but increases comfort.

Comfort and Connectivity

Whether you choose the base model or the fully loaded Atlas options kit, you're getting a lot for the money. Premium options for the new Volkswagen Atlas include things like heated front seats and multi-zone climate control, of course, but also include luxury features like a heated steering wheel--and you don't ever realize you want/need a heated steering wheel until the first winter day you get to use one.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto both come standard to help keep you connected. They stream to a standard 6.5-inch touchscreen, but you can upgrade to a stunning 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system on multiple trim levels. The new Volkswagen Digital Cockpit system is an option, and it's a big perk. In safety, new standard features include automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlights, and more.

Exterior Features and Specs

The handsome Volkswagen Atlas stands 70 inches tall, braced 78 inches wide, and stretches back to a length of 198 inches. This is not your grandma's crossover--unless your grandma bought one, in which case, it is. There are a variety of package options, trim levels, and looks you can choose to personalize your new Atlas.

Trim Levels

  • Atlas S
  • Atlas V6 S with 4MOTION
  • Atlas V6 SE (+ 4MOTION, Technology, and/or R-Line)
  • Atlas V6 SEL (+ 4MOTION, R-Line, and/or Premium

Special Editions and Package Options

The 4MOTION Package, understandably, adds 4MOTION all-wheel drive to a trim. The Technology Package and Premium Package add features and effects like advanced LED lighting, and larger wheels to standard exterior features like heated side mirrors. The R-Line Package adds a dash of sporty design and luxurious accents to the exterior of the Volkswagen Atlas. Color options include Reflex Silver, Terra Brown, Pure White, Platinum Gray, Deep Black, Tourmaline Blue, Fortana Red, and Pacific Blue.

Performance Features and Specs

It's time to move. Let the Volkswagen Atlas show you what it can do.

Engine and Transmission

There are two engines available on this new lineup: a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder (good for 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque) and a 3.6-liter V6 engine (good for 276 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque). You can see there isn't a huge difference in actual specs, but you'll feel the difference when you drive it. Both engines pair to an 8-speed automatic.

Atlas 4MOTION All-Wheel Drive

Volkswagen's powerful and capable 4MOTION All-Wheel-Drive System is an option on all trims except the base S model--outfit your SE, SE V6, or SEL Atlas with AWD, and you're ready to go just about anywhere.

One of the most significant changes to the new Atlas is the updated safety and driver assistance features. The adaptive cruise control feature now includes stop-and-go capability for more ease in traffic. Lane-assist is improved as well, with the camera smoothly centering the Atlas in its lane. With the addition of traffic-sign recognition to the driver assistance suite, you can get extra help noticing everything from speed limits to stop signs.
